I am a 43 year old mum of 2 living on the UK's South Coast. I'm interested in cycling, and I envy the cycle culture that we see in other parts of the world like Holland or Belgium. I'm not a bike fanatic, in fact I still use a car quite a bit but I passionately believe that our country can only be a better place if we become more cycle friendly. My husband and I enjoy a bit of mountain and road biking together and this year we've had 2 short breaks on the Isle of Wight on 2 wheels which have been great fun. I like the road biking best but it's still pretty dangerous on some roads. My 10 year old son regularly cycles to and from school, but he uses the pavement because the roads are too dangerous and there are no off road cycle paths. Recently I've tried out the Boris Bike scheme in London, loved it and am very exited about the plans for a cycle superhighway in London.
I'm setting up this blog for 3 reasons; 1 - to raise cycle awareness for other road users, if we all were a little more bike friendly in our cars then it would be a safer place for cyclists; 2 - to champion the many benefits of cycling (health, environmental, economic); 3 - to share information for cyclists. The third might include information about cycle routes, reviews of holidays, bikes, facilities or a write up of a cycling experience.
This may not be a blog for the bike fanatic who is much more likely to know far more about cycling that I do. It's for people like me, families, ordinary folk, people who might like to cycle a bit more, or who would love their kids to cycle to school but worry it's a bit dangerous. Who fancy the idea of cycling to work but don't want to arrive all sweaty. Who like the idea of the odd outing but aren't that keen on too much lycra.
Pending review, I'm happy to host posts from other contributors so if you feel you've got something to say for cyclists, send me a link.
Happy cycling!!
